Snowmobile 2004 February 13th, 14th & 15th

Well boys and girls we made it back out into the snow this year.  Making a little detour from our regular Eagle River route we found ourselves up in Luzerne MI.  Not only did we begin our trip on Friday the 13th we had 13 sleders!   Talk about lucky,  we all managed to stay together the whole time and there were no serious injuries.   The snow was great and the temperatures a balmy 20 something.  The trails stated out good until late Saturday when the number of riders took their toll on them.  Enjoy the pictures and if I get time I will post more info on our trip

Barney, Mongo, & Mr. Magabagoo

Setting up deer camp at the start of the season, Barney, Mongo, and Mr. Magabagoo prepare for a night of lavish stories and burnt hot dogs.

This was our second weekend out to our hunting grounds. We set up camp in a nice spot by the lake sheltered from the wind. With a warm fire and a package of ball park franks we talked of the deer that we did not see that day and how we were going to get that monster buck in the morning. Mr. Magabagoo had a hard time cooking his dogs and found the extra charcoal flavor to be rather intriguing. Mongo’s fish tales kept getting larger. Barney sat back with his cold brew and told his “True” stories.

Vancouver - Welcome To Canada Eh!

Ah the city of Vancouver!  Nestled away on the western seaboard of North America it is a spectacular destination.

While in Seattle for business, a great city in itself, I ventured north to this treasure of our Canadian friends.  The climate is much like that of Seattle with lots to do.  Staying downtown in one of the many hotels or bed and breakfasts you can easily walk to many great restaurants, pubs, theaters, you name it.  The eye catching CN IMAX Theater at Canada Place will help fill your day with amazing 3-D adventures before jumping aboard a Harbor Cruise Ltd sightseeing tour of the inner harbor. You get so caught up in the sites while walking that you end up on the other side of town before you know it. Of course if you have a vehicle you will have greater access to all of Vancouver which is split in two by the harbor.

Close by are the mountains were you can enjoy skiing or snowboarding at Grouse Mountain, or walk across Vancouver's famous Capilano suspension footbridge which crosses 230 feet above Capilano River to West Coast rainforest trails.  And you don't want to miss out on Stanley Park . It is a beautiful 1000 acre park that includes the famous rose garden, the Lions gate bridge, a red cedar forest, the Vancouver Aquarium, native Indian totems, and many other attractions.

If you are a Seinfeld fan you will have no choice but to visit The Stock Pot located in Lonsdale Quay. The Stock Pot is Seinfeld's Soup Nazi. They have the best soups I have ever had the privilege of tasting. Not only do you get a piece of bread to soak up every last drop of one of the thousands of soups as you eat in the court yard watching the activities, but you can get it to go. If you were to send a couple gallons of this home to your friends they would be at your feet praising you for every spoonful of heaven they received from you.

I have to say that I had a great time in Vancouver and having done everything mention above would highly recommend it as a destination you should visit soon.

Alaska ... A must for all to see

the Mendenhall Glacier

One of the most exciting excursions that I had taken on a vacation was a glacier trek.  Not only did we hike the Mendenhall Glacier, but we got the opportunity to climb a 100 foot wall of ice.  The views were spectacular and the water was cold and refreshing.  The photo is linked to their web site if you are interested in the adventure.  North Star Trekking  is a top notch outfit with experienced guides and pilots.  They made our day one to remember.

Welcome to the Snowmobile Capital of the World, and home of "The Eagle River 500"

Island View II - Eagle River, Wisconsin

Our sleds of 2002

What a place to stay.

Every year we trek up to Northern Wisconsin in search of the perfect snow flake.  This snowmobile trip starts off by finding a house with easy access to trails and a view to enhance the parties that cap off a hard day of sledding.

We found this incredible house called Island View II on Scattering Rice lake (see picture).  With accommodations for 24 we have plenty of room to rock this house. Our last adventure had us there on new years 2002.  To bring in the new year we constructed an 8ft tower of timber and ignited it.  Our neighbor’s puny fire was put to shame as our flames grew, and soon we had defectors join us around our "Real" fire toasting in the new year in style.  To feed our hungry friends, my friend and I deep fried two turkeys and supplied a giant pot of hot glog to keep them warm.

Glog

(Pronounced glook)

This is a traditional Swedish holiday drink. It cures the common cold, and will put hair on your chest.

Eagle River is the Snowmobile Capital of the World, and home of "The Eagle River 500" With an average annual snowfall of nearly 200 inches, Eagle River boasts some of the best snowmobiling in the world. The numerous area snowmobile clubs groom and maintain a 500 mile trail network that is known as the "Eagle River 500. These trails wind through beautiful forests and across frozen lakes. To keep an eye on the weather conditions Snowconditions.com lets us see the snow that has fallen via the SNOWCAM and gives us trial conditions.

Every morning we would wake up and head out on the trails in search of virgin snow.  The ride up into Michigan is beyond words.  The trails are a blast and when you finally cross over you find yourself in a state forest with long snow covered roads that allow you to test out your top speed.

One thing that you must remember when out on full day rides, watch you fuel!  There is nothing worse than being on empty, lost in the middle of nowhere, and go gas station in site.  And if you are in this situation I would advise you NOT to call your wife on a cell phone that is barley getting a signal to tell here you are lost.  There may be confusion due to static on the line or you signal going in and out and when you are disconnected she calls the local police ( Illinois) to tell them her husband is lost in Wisconsin on a snowmobile. Well we did finally find a gas station and a pay phone to call the wife back to tell her we were safe. That is when we found out she had called the police to report us missing.  She then asked us to call the police and tell them we were ok even though we were still 6 hours from home, on a pay phone and 3 states away.  Oh the memories always make these trips that much more fun.
